Hi. Since you are reading this
I am assuming you want to know who I am, how I started playing
golf and where I came from.
Well, I was born Aug 4, 1976 in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia,
PA. My parents, well they say they are my parents, are Russ
and Lorraine Hanna and neither has a lick of golf talent.
Sorry Dad! My mother is a life master bridge player and is
my body guard. My father is semi-retired and loves to play
golf...always playing golf. Without my parents, well without
them I wouldn't be alive! Really though, my parents have been
the best parents a kid could ask for. They have always been
100% supportive and have seen me through all the good times
and the bad ones. I couldn't have made it to where I am today
if it were not for the both of them. My mother is a constant
source of encouragement and my dad...he has let me beat him
since I was 12, to help build my confidence! My dad was a
standout gymnast when he was younger, so I am assuming I got
my athletic talent from him. My dad is an incredible athlete
and in his day, a good golfer as well, so thanks dad for passing
on the talent.
I have 2 brothers. Not really sure what their names are, but
I think Craig and Geoff. Craig is my older brother. He
owns and operates a graphic design firm and a software development company.
Geoff is my younger brother and we aren't sure what he is. We
do know that he loves animals and reptiles and has 2 snakes
that are 8 and 10 feet long!!!
On a serious note, I love both of my brothers more than they
will ever know.
I started playing golf at the age of 6. I would go to the
driving range with my dad in NJ. He cut down a little three
wood for me. Whatever Daddy did I had to do! Then we moved
to Indiana shortly after that. When I turned 9 I started playing
in our club's junior golf program. However golf was my third
love. Basketball was my first and softball my second. I played
basketball from the time I was in 2nd grade until I graduated
high school in Solon OH. Softball, I played from 2nd grade
through my sophomore year in high school. About my junior
year in high school I made a decision to go on with golf in
college and leave basketball behind. A very very difficult
decision for me.
I somehow was able to get a small scholarship to Furman University
in Greenville SC. For those of you who do not know, Furman
has always had one of the top ranked golf programs in the
nation and has alumni such as Betsy King, Beth Daniel, Dottie
Pepper, Sherri Turner, and me of course!! I was not exactly
Furman caliber but the coach, Mic Potter, offered me a scholarship,
but later I found out it was because I played basketball.
Mic believes it's much easier to mold an athlete into a golfer.
So off I went. I had a lot of hard work ahead of me but I
am so thankful that Mic was there to guide me. If it were
not for Mic my talent would still be lost somewhere. I went
to Furman averaging in the low 80's and left 4 years later
averaging 73. Mic has continued to be my coach through the
years!
While I was at Furman I set the season low stroke average
my senior year and earned the Furman Female Athlete award
in 98. I also earned 3 MVP awards and 2 time southern conference
player of the year. I piled up 20 top 10's and 14 top 5 finishes.
And most importantly I received a degree in Health and Exercise
Science.I graduated in 1998 and this past summer I was inducted
into the Furman University Hall of Fame.
Professional Career In 1998
I graduated Furman and turned pro. I failed to qualify for
the LPGA on my first attempt so I played on the Futures Tour
for a year. The Futures tour is the developmental tour for
the LPGA. Much like the Nationwide for the guys. In 1999 I
finished 13th on the money list and had 7 top 10 finishes.
I went back to the LPGA q school to try again to earn status
to play on tour. I finished 13th and gained my exempt card
for the year 2000.
2000 started off with a bang! I was leading the first tournament
in Naples FL going into the last round. However shot a 74
on sunday and finished 8th. Although I didn't come away with
a victory, what an amazing first week. The rest of the year
had its ups and downs. I had another top 10 finish later in
the spring. It was a great learning year and I was ready to
work hard in the off season and prepare for 01!
2001 started with a bang as well! It was maybe the 5th tournament
or so in Tucson AZ and I shot 63-68 to be leading over Annika
by 2. I played with Annika on Saturday. She shot 68 and I
shot 72. She took the lead by two and I felt good about my
chances on Sunday. However Sunday was not so nice to me I
finished with a 76. But it felt good to be up there again
and I knew if I could just keep putting myself there eventually
I could come out on top. The rest of the year was a lot like
the first. I felt I was making improvements and taking my
baby steps. I also had my first double eagle at the tournament
in New Rochelle NY.
2002. Not really a year I like to talk about. It was my worst
year and nothing seemed to go right and I felt like I was
never going to be able to play this game again. It was a struggle
all year long and I barely earned status for the 03 year.
In the off season I went to see a club fitter by the name
of Mike Obarsky in Greenville SC. Mike is the owner of ESPen
fitting systems and he saved my career. I went to Mike in
January and found out that the clubs I was playing were 30
cycles too stiff. So no wonder I couldnt play!!! He built
me a new set of clubs and I felt a rush of confidence come
back. I worked hard for the next two months before the season.
I had a lot of bad habits from my old equipment.
2003. On paper nothing looks a whole lot better but the feeling
inside of me is a whole lot different. I didn't make a lot
of cuts. I only played 10 events. My stats weren't even much
better. But my confidence continues to grow everyday. Because
of my status I had to Monday qualify for most events. I qualified
6 times...more than anyone else. And the highlight of the
year came at the last event. I had 9 tournaments and 3 years
under my belt. You must have 4 years of 10 or more tournaments
on the LPGA to earn Class A status. Class A status means you
are a lifetime member. I had to qualify for the event. This
Monday qualifier probably had 20 or so players in it. And
only the low 2 scores get a place in the field for the week.
I was first out and shot 1 over 73. But I made the turn at
2 over and bogeyed number 12. So I finished strong and knew
I had a chance. I had to wait nearly 3 hours for everyone
to finish. There was a 70 in the club house already. It came
down to the last group. I couldn't even look at the scores
so I sent my caddy. She gave me the thumbs up..which I could
hardly see because it was dark! But I knew I was in!
2004. I still do not have great status for 04 but I will
be Monday qualifying again and I feel like things are starting
to get better. My swing feels stronger and better. And most
importantly my confidence is coming back. I still have a lot
to work on but everything is coming together now. So hopefully
before long you will see me with that lead again going into
Sunday and this time I will be holding the trophy at the end!
My Thank You's Page I am so
thankful for the opportunites that I have had and the people
in my life that have always believed in me. Starting with
my parents, my family and my friends. To my first coach Charlie
Wood who was an influential person in my decision to attend
Furman. My teammates in high school (Solon High School) where
I played on a boys' team and my coach Ron Materni for allowing
me the opportunity to play and to be "one of the boys"!
To my teachers in high school who always believed in me and
still do (you know who you are). My college teammates, especially
my freshman year, Caroline Blaylock (Peek), Diana D'Alessio,
Ashli Bunch, (all who play on tour), and also Kate Burnett,
Heather Taylor, and Dawn Turner. We had an amazing team and
they always pushed me to be better.
Even my college professors saw my drive and ambition and provided
me with an education as well as a lot of support. And I have
to thank my practice buddy Rich Massey; I would be so bored
without you! Rich attended Furman as well and we have practiced
together ever since I turned pro in 98.
To Mic Potter, the women's golf coach at Furman, I
will never be able to thank you for all that you have done and
continue to do. You have taught me so much and have been so patient
with me throughout the years. I really believe I would not be where
I am today if it were not for you! So thank you.
And my Phil....Phil Krick that is! I met Phil in July 2003.
At first I went to him to help me with my putting. Little did
I know I was going to get a lesson in "attitude" but I am glad
I did. The next week I had my best finish of the year. Phil
is now part of my team and I am so glad he is. He will be with
me at some events next year, you may mistake him for my bodyguard!
Thanks to everyone who believed in me and supported me. Without
you it would have been hard to keep my head high and muscle
through the last few years. |
